FIGHT FOR PEACE RECEIVE COMMUNITY HEROES AWARD

Fight for Peace was recognised at this year’s East London Community Heroes Awards on Friday 30th August, winning the prize for Outstanding Initiative in Sports Development.

The award, an acknowledgement of the exceptional boxing and martial arts programmes on offer at our Academy in North Woolwich, was accepted by Sports Development Manager Silvino Domingos during a prestigious ceremony held at the University of East London.

“It was fantastic to win the award for Outstanding Initiative in Sports Development,” said Silvino.

“Everything we do is a combination of myself and all of the coaches and all the people around me at Fight for Peace, so, although it was nice getting this award, it felt a bit weird receiving it personally, because it should be a collective rather than an individual award.”

Youth Power member and Volunteer Youth Worker, Zaynab attended the event alongside Silvino and Business Development Director, Tom Barratt, where we were also nominated in the category of Outstanding Initiative in Peace & Conflict Resolution.

“I felt as though the awards ceremony went so well and I appreciated having been given the opportunity to attend,” said Zaynab, who also covered the event for Fight for Peace’s social media channels in her role as a Young Creative. “I thought it was a very deserved win and goes to show the positive impact we have on young people through the use of sports!!!”

The East London Community Heroes Awards, now in its sixth year, is organised by the Rotary Club of Stratford and aims to shine a spotlight on the remarkable individuals, charities and community groups dedicated to enhancing our local area.

The award for Outstanding Initiative In Sports Development – judged on community needs, effectiveness of the initiative, sustainability and innovation – is testament to the amazing achievements of the Fight for Peace family, which last year welcomed nearly 800 new members through the doors of our London Academy.

After coming through a rigorous shortlisting process, our entry impressed a distinguished judging panel, fending off competition from Ascension Eagles, FC Leytonstone and Bharat Cricket Community to claim the top prize.

“The award is due recognition for the hard work of our brilliant coaches and youth workers in helping young people to realise their potential,” said Fight for Peace Business Development Director, Tom Barratt.

“It’s a real honour to be recognised by one of the world’s largest networks of people that is committed to serving others and, like Fight for Peace, to promoting peace in communities.”
