Here at Fight for Peace we take great pride in supporting young people beyond boxing and martial arts, encouraging them to take the skills and character development they have learned in the gym into their lives, and their studies.
Our team of Youth Workers have recently completed a successful Homework Club, which has been popular among our younger members of primary school age. The club launched in September last year, with twice-weekly sessions taking place in the Fight for Peace classroom to help young people complete their schoolwork.
Since its launch, despite seeing the impact of this developmental space for our young members first hand, we always value the thoughts and feedback from parents and guardians. It helps us know what’s working, and what can be improved across the wide range of services we provide to 7-25 year olds.
Gregory is a consistent attendee of our sessions, and never fails to bring a ray of sunshine to our Academy, always turning up on time to Twilights and Junior sessions, while spending his spare time outside of sessions in the hub playing table tennis with his peers and the Fight for Peace team.
Since the launch of Homework Club, Gregory remained steadfast in his commitment to being a part of the Fight for Peace family, attending sessions weekly to complete his extra-curricular studies alongside his friends and peers.
Gregory’s mum Justyna, runs her own business and embodies the role of single mother to support her son. We recently caught up with Justyna who shared with us how much she appreciates our Homework Club being a service available at Fight for Peace.
“Gregory has somewhere he can go after school which he really enjoys and I know that he is safe, doing things that he enjoys, and is learning,” Justyna explained.
Our Homework Club is an important part of the Fight for Peace Five Pillar approach, combining Boxing and Martial Arts with Education, Employment, Youth Leadership and Support Services for the next generation to support them in reaching their full potential.
Our dedicated team of youth workers are trained to support young people in various areas of their lives, from their academic studies, to providing mentoring and guidance to encourage and inspire young champions like Gregory to reach their goals. Discussions around achievements and challenges in academia are also facilitated during sessions to provide participants with an outlet, and an opportunity to gain perspective and guidance in a safe and non-judgemental space.
“Since attending the homework club,” Justyna shared, “the feedback from Gregory’s teachers has been really good. At the most recent parents’ evening the feedback was that he always gets homework in on time and that his homework is always done, which is great because it’s one less thing for me to have to think about!”
“Gregory has been attending Fight for Peace for over three years and regularly attends the Twilights programme as well as junior boxing. In September, he started attending the homework club sessions, and he regularly attends and says that he really enjoys the sessions,” Justyna added.
We greatly value feedback from parents like Justyna, it’s always fulfilling for us to hear first-hand the impact of our programmes, and it’s clear that there is a need for this space not only among our young members, but their parents.
Well done to our team of youth workers for delivering a successful Homework Club! We are thrilled with its progress and are looking forward to kicking it off again this September!
Huge thank you to our generous funders, Access Foundation for making our Homework Club possible!
