It’s been a year since the launch of our weekly Fight for Peace boxing sessions for young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). To mark the occasion, we’re reflecting on the incredible progress made in creating a fun, welcoming, and empowering environment for participants.
Designed as a safe and adaptable space, the sessions provide an opportunity for young people with a range of needs, including neurodiversity, mental health challenges, and physical disabilities to develop both physically and personally. The aim is to build a space where everyone feels included, supported, and able to thrive.
Led by coaches Tommy and Percy, our SEND sessions take place every Monday from 6–7pm. Over time, we’ve seen a steady increase in engagement, not just from young people, but also from their parents and carers, many of whom play an active role in supporting their child’s participation.

Over the past year, coaches have seen significant changes in many of the young people. From improved emotional regulation to increased focus and reduced hyperactivity, participants have shown growth not just in boxing skills, but in how they engage with others. Within just a few weeks, many began to look forward to the sessions, asking after new friends, growing in confidence, and becoming more present and respectful.
Parents and carers are welcomed into the sessions to support their children and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. These opportunities are vital, as for many, this is the first time their child has attended a sports session like this.
For Saqib and his son Hamza, who joined in the second half of 2024, the sessions have become a valued part of their weekly routine. Saqib reflects on the experience so far, sharing: “He really loves his coaches, he likes coming here. If he comes consistently then he pays attention, although sometimes he can get a bit distracted but he gets a lot out of it, the boxing.”
“Everyone’s very friendly here and he loves going around and speaking to people at the Academy. At home he sometimes wants to do some boxing. I tell him I can try but these guys [the coaches] are the experts, so when you come into the sessions show them your jab cross!”
Hamza has tried other sports in the past, but the adaptability of the SEND boxing programme has made all the difference. “Physically he struggles with certain things but he’s recently had an interest in leg exercises so we’re going to start him at the gym with a personal trainer. Once he starts, I’m hoping it’ll help him with progressing in boxing and take more of an interest in fitness.”
Stories like Hamza’s highlight one of the key elements behind the success of our SEND sessions which is flexibility. Percy and Tommy adapt each session to meet the wide-ranging needs of the group. Whether it’s age, type of disability, or emotional readiness, sessions are tailored with varied activities, pacing, and expectations. One to one support is also offered to ensure that every young person feels safe and able to take part fully.
While all young people benefit from being part of a strong and connected community, those with SEND often face additional barriers to accessing sport and group activities. This programme has helped to break down those barriers, offering a space where young people can express themselves freely, build friendships, and feel part of something bigger.
At Fight for Peace, young people who may not be able to access mainstream sporting environments are included and celebrated. They share experiences, support each other, and build trust within themselves and within the group.
Participants have gained much more than boxing skills. They’ve developed self-discipline, confidence, and lasting friendships, helping them become champions in the ring and champions in life. Most importantly, they’ve found a space where they are seen, valued, and empowered to grow.
It’s been a real pleasure to witness the evolution of our SEND boxing group. We’re incredibly proud of the young people who show up each week ready to learn, connect, and have fun. Huge thanks to Percy and Tommy for creating an environment where every young person can thrive. It’s been an inspiring journey so far and we can’t wait to see what’s next.
Fight for Peace SEND boxing sessions take place every Monday from 6-7pm and are free to young people aged 7-18. If you would like to find out more, please contact info@fightforpeace.net.
