NKBA was founded by former South African boxing champion, and two-times world title contender, Nika Kumalo, in order to revive boxing in the township of Langa, where Nika was himself raised.

After a hugely successful boxing career, in which he became something of a South African sporting icon, Nika settled in Johannesburg, where he established a recruitment business. But his heart was always in Langa- where there’s even a statue erected of him. So in 2013 Nika decided to return to Langa to set up a boxing academy. At just this time, Fight For Peace were looking for partners in Cape Town and an exciting synergy emerged. After spending a week at the FFP Academy in Rio, Nika saw new potential for how the sport he has known and loved since his youth could be used to help transform communities like his own. His vision for NKBA was transformed and a 5-pillar programme designed.

Nika has now established a boxing gym in a local community sports facility and is also running boxing, IT classes and homework support in local schools. Nika has also been using his boxing experience to support coaches at other boxing programmes within the FFP Cape Town group.
