It started as a street peoples intervention (outreach) programme in Mitchell’s Plain in 1990, In 1994 the branch expanded services to other areas on the Cape Flats and became the Cape Flats YMCA.

Headed by Ricardo de Reuck, who himself grew up in the area, the organisation runs diverse programs across numerous sites. Their health programme works within 40 existing health clinics providing HIV education and testing, sexual health and family planning services, as well as running projects to target particular diseases that severely affect the area’s low-income families, such as tuberculosis.

The organisation also particularly works in local schools offering life skills courses and after-school clubs to provide local young people with an alternative to being on the streets, as well as creative and developmental activities.

The Cape Flats YMCA sports programme includes football, netball, and dance, to which they will now be adding combat sports. Ricardo’s vision is to build a dedicated sports, arts and youth development facility on their land.
