Fight with Insight currently focuses its work on child sex offenders – running 12 week diversion programmes as alternative to criminal prosecution and incarceration, under the Child Justice Act. Working with the Teddy Bear Clinic who offers a wide range of therapies and psycho-social support, Fight with Insight provides young people with a more focused programme based around counselling and boxing training.
Fight with Insight already work closely with the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, and it was through this partnership that a number of young people and staff from Luta pela Paz travelled to Johannesburg to participate in a youth exchange project with Fight with Insight.
Luke is keen to look at how Fight with Insight can work more closely alongside the other youth programmes that are based in the same NGO centre. The intention is to establish a new centre that will allow Fight with Insight to deliver a walk-in service for a wider group of young people and a referral system whereby other NGOs working with young people can refer cases that might benefit from the Fight with Insight approach to child rehabilitation and youth support.
Luke is closely aligned with the FFP principle that boxing and martial arts is particularly effective at engaging with the hardest to reach young people living in communities affected by crime and violence. He is keen to develop a more integrated model in which their pro-social, interpersonal and psychosocial messages are woven into their training sessions – thus becoming an independent and sustainable youth support programme.
