Fight for Peace partner wins BBC Sports Personality Unsung Hero Award
21/12/2016 – Marcellus Baz, Founder of the Nottingham School of Boxing, has won the Unsung Hero Award at the 2016 BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards ceremony held in Birmingham. The Nottingham School of Boxing, whose mission is to engage Nottingham’s young people in positive activities and empower them to break the cycle of offending and reoffending, is a Fight for Peace partner in the UK Alumni Programme (UK AP).
The BBC Get Inspired Unsung Hero Award recognises the remarkable work of individuals whose efforts encourage the sporting talents of others and enable local clubs and groups to thrive. Marcellus was chosen as the overall winner from a shortlist of fifteen regional award winners made up of men and women from across the UK.
On receiving the award, Marcellus was keen to recognise the importance of his team at Nottingham School of Boxing:
“I feel honoured and humbled to have received the unsung Hero award and represented Nottingham at the Sports Personality of the Year awards last night. I couldn’t have done this without the support of my family and my team, who I regard as my family”, said Marcellus.
“Across the Alumni Programme there are unsung heroes who are helping young people to realise their potential and who Fight for Peace supports in this mission. Marcellus is a key member of the programme and we are absolutely delighted that he has been honoured with this award. The work that he and his team do is inspirational and he thoroughly deserves this recognition”, added Fight for Peace UK Alumni Programme Trainer, Ana Vacas.
